How to Tile a Bathroom Floor

Step 1: Prepare the Floor

Begin by removing all of the existing flooring and subflooring. This will give you a clean slate to work with. If your bathroom has a wood subfloor, you will need to cover it with a layer of backerboard before tiling. The backerboard will help to support the tile and prevent it from cracking. Cut the backerboard to fit the floor and secure it with screws. Once the backerboard is in place, spread a thin layer of thin-set mortar over it. Thin-set mortar is a type of adhesive that is used to bond the tile to the backerboard.

Step 2: Lay Out the Tiles

Before you start tiling, it is important to lay out the tiles to make sure that they will fit properly. Start by finding the center of the floor. Then, measure out from the center and mark the location of the first tile. Continue laying out the tiles until you reach the edges of the floor.

Once you have laid out the tiles, you can start setting them in place. Apply a thin layer of thin-set mortar to the back of each tile and press it into place. Use a trowel to spread the thin-set mortar evenly. Be sure to press the tiles firmly into place so that they adhere properly.

Continue setting the tiles until you reach the edges of the floor. If you need to cut a tile to fit, use a tile saw. Once all of the tiles are in place, let the thin-set mortar dry completely.

Step 3: Grout the Tiles

Once the thin-set mortar has dried, you can begin grouting the tiles. Grout is a type of cement that is used to fill in the spaces between the tiles. Apply the grout to the tiles using a grout float. Press the grout into the spaces between the tiles firmly. Be sure to remove any excess grout with a damp sponge.

Allow the grout to dry completely. Once the grout is dry, you can seal it with a grout sealer. A grout sealer will help to protect the grout from stains and wear.
