Shower Pan For Tile Floor

A shower pan is a waterproof barrier that is installed beneath the tile on the floor of a shower. Its purpose is to prevent water from leaking through the grout joints and damaging the subfloor. Shower pans are typically made of acrylic or fiberglass, and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit any shower space.

Types of Shower Pans

There are two main types of shower pans: molded and fabricated.

  1. Molded shower pans are made from a single piece of acrylic or fiberglass. They are lightweight and easy to install, but they are not as customizable as fabricated shower pans.
  2. Fabricated shower pans are made from multiple pieces of acrylic or fiberglass that are welded together to create a custom shape. They are more expensive and difficult to install than molded shower pans, but they offer more flexibility in design.

Choosing a Shower Pan

When choosing a shower pan, there are a few factors to consider:

  • Size: The shower pan should be the same size as the shower floor.
  • Shape: The shower pan should fit the shape of the shower floor.
  • Material: Shower pans are typically made of acrylic or fiberglass. Acrylic is more expensive than fiberglass, but it is also more durable.
  • Features: Some shower pans have additional features, such as built-in shelves or seats.

Installing a Shower Pan

Installing a shower pan is a relatively simple process. The first step is to prepare the subfloor by making sure it is level and smooth. The next step is to apply a thin layer of mortar to the subfloor. The shower pan is then placed on the mortar and pressed into place.

Once the shower pan is installed, the tile can be installed on top of it. The tile should be set in thinset mortar and grouted with a waterproof grout.

Maintaining a Shower Pan

Shower pans are relatively easy to maintain. The best way to keep them clean is to wipe them down with a mild cleaner after each use. If the shower pan becomes stained, it can be cleaned with a stronger cleaner, such as bleach.

Shower pans should also be inspected regularly for cracks or leaks. If a crack or leak is found, it should be repaired immediately.
